Grimtotem is a female-fronted pagan/folk metal band from Arauco, Bio-Bío, Chile whose music draws from the legends, myths, and history of the Mapuche and Chiloé cultures of southern Chile. Their discography includes the demo "Wengan" (2014), the album "Invunche" (2016) — which invokes the Mapuche mythological figure of the invunche as a metaphor for colonial violence — and two further albums, "Espíritu Del Bosque" (2021) and "El Golfo Y El Humedal Resisten" (2022).
Hagbard is an epic folk metal band from Juiz de Fora, Brazil, drawing on fantasy and mythological themes from multiple cultures. The band released their debut full-length Rise of the Sea King in November 2013 through the Russian label SoundAge Productions, recorded in Brazil and mixed and mastered in Sweden. Subsequent releases include the EP Tales of Frost and Flames (2015) and the album Vortex to an Iron Age (2016).
Huinca is a folk metal band from Santiago, Chile, formed in 2001 from the remains of an earlier project called Stonehenge, blending heavy metal with indigenous Chilean musical traditions including Ngillatunes, Huaynos, and Tonadas. The band has released three albums — Huinca (2006), Sic Semper Tyrannis (2012), and América Letrina (2019) — and has toured internationally in South America and Europe, earning best-show recognition at Poland's Slot Art Festival.
Laftrache are a black metal and folk band from Villa Alemana, Chile, whose music draws from the legends of the Mapuche and Selknam peoples of southern South America. Their 2017 demo Voces Ancestrales features the Trutruca — a trumpet-like instrument made from colihue wood and cattle horn, created by the Mapuche — as well as a spoken-word sample of a native Selknam woman on the track "El Clamor Selknam." The band was released through Chilean underground label Kuyen Producciones.
Leuku are a progressive and atmospheric metal band from Santiago, Chile, co-founded around 2006 by guitarists Bauda and Parton, the latter also known for his work in the separate band Bauda. The group blends progressive and psychedelic rock structures with folk-influenced acoustic elements, and released the split EP Mares with Bauda in 2007, followed by the full-length Blindfolded in 2011 on Pest Productions with a lineup that included five members.
Lothlöryen is a melodic power/folk metal band originating from Machado, Minas Gerais, Brazil, formed in 2002–2003 and later based in Poços de Caldas. Named in homage to J.R.R. Tolkien's elven forest, the band has built a reputation as one of Brazil's leading folk metal acts, releasing albums such as Of Bards and Madmen (2005), Raving Souls Society (2012), and Principles of a Past Tomorrow (2015), and touring across more than eight countries. In 2025 they released …of Bards and Madmen [reimagined], revisiting their debut.
Myrkgand is essentially a one-man project driven by Dmitry Luna, whose 2017 debut album enlisted guest appearances from members of Symphony X, Novembers Doom, Mystifier, and Korzus to flesh out its mythology-drenched blend of melodic death, black, and folk metal. The 2022 follow-up Rituals & Wisdom was recorded in Oslo and Lisbon with Øystein Brun of Borknagar producing, pushing the project's ambitions into genuinely international territory.
Oscuro Mito is a black/folk metal band from Cochabamba, Bolivia, formed in 2008 and released through Catáfila Producciones. Their music draws heavily on Andean themes — Inca and Aymara culture, ancestral legends, and indigenous paganism — which sets them apart within Bolivia's extreme metal scene. The band released their debut full-length Yuraq Ushpa in 2019, following years of demos and split appearances including the 2015 compilation Holocausto Zine.
Viking/folk metal band from São Paulo, formed in 2011, with a lineup that includes André Frekiugr on vocals and bagpipes, Victor Maldonado on guitar, Felipe Malavazzi on bass, and Dubh on drums. The band issued the six-track demo Galdra Smidr in December 2011, with lyrics and themes drawn from Norse paganism and mythology.
