Iatrogenic

Iatrogenic formed in Londrina in 2016, taking their name from the medical term for harm inflicted by the act of healing itself - a fittingly bleak choice for a death-metal project whose lyrical orbit covers witchcraft, chaos, murder, mental illness and sickness. The original Iatrogenic incarnation ran from 2016 to 2018, with the core members eventually retooling the project as Yatrogenist from 2021 onward; the Bandcamp catalogue under the original name preserves that first chapter for the underground completists who care about exactly that kind of granular detail. Sonically they belong to a strain of Brazilian death metal that prizes American-school heaviness - Morbid Angel's twisting tritones, Immolation's downward riff logic, Incantation's cavernous low end - over the more thrash-rooted approach of older Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte bands. Londrina has been quietly building one of the country's most consistent extreme metal corridors for over twenty years, and Iatrogenic sit alongside Guro, Deranged Insane and a long bench of split-tape and DIY bands that treat the city's clubs and rehearsal rooms as the actual centre of Brazilian death metal, regardless of what southeastern coverage suggests. Their material leans toward the medium-paced, dissonant end of the genre rather than blast-driven brutal death: riffs that crawl and pivot, drums that emphasise feel over speed, vocals delivered as a low, gutturally enunciated bellow. The themes - bodies betrayed by medicine, minds turning on themselves - lend a clinical, almost surgical coldness to music that in lesser hands could just be exercises in heaviness. As Iatrogenic the project was brief; as Yatrogenist the same musicians continue to refine the same uneasy approach to Brazilian death metal.
