I Saw the Devil

I Saw the Devil come out of Londrina, the northern Paraná city that has quietly become one of Brazil's densest concentrations of extreme music, sitting on the highway corridor that links Curitiba's better-known scene to Maringá and the rural west. Locals know the lineage: pioneer death/grind unit Deranged Insane began there in 2000 before relocating partway to Japan; Guro have been pushing brutal grind out of the same city since 2014; Greve picked up the thread in 2020. I Saw the Devil belong to that continuum - a death-metal-leaning grindcore project that treats Carcass's 'Reek of Putrefaction', Repulsion, Terrorizer and the older Sao Paulo deathgrind tradition as living, working references rather than museum pieces. The sound is filthy and compact, songs measured in seconds rather than minutes, riffs sharpened to a single jagged point and abandoned the moment a fill or a vocal entry comes in. Production values match the ambition: this is music made for cassette splits, EP-length CD-Rs and back-room sets where the PA is borrowed and the crowd is half the bill. Londrina's circuit has never been about chasing the next big sound; it has been about volume, repetition and a refusal to soften, and I Saw the Devil's deathgrind embodies that ethic. There is room here for both the syrupy-pitched Carcass guitar wallow and the snare-led blast attacks Brazilian grindcore has perfected for forty years, but no time wasted on atmosphere, transitions or scene politics. Like most of their Londrina peers, they release music in short, brutal bursts, gig hard around southern Brazil and treat the absence of mainstream coverage as proof that the underground is working as intended.
