Hurtgen

Hurtgen have been grinding out blackened death metal from Maringá, in the northwestern interior of Paraná, since 2010, taking their name from the brutal Hurtgen Forest campaign of late 1944 and turning that imagery of grey, attritional violence into a sonic blueprint. Where Curitiba's better-documented extreme scene gravitates toward technicality and proggy ambition, Maringá's smaller, blue-collar circuit has always favoured directness, and Hurtgen operate firmly in that tradition: midpaced, riff-led death metal pulled sideways by black-metal tremolo passages, cold open chords and an obsession with war, chaos, anti-Christianity and honour. The recordings prize clarity over wall-of-noise saturation - guitars cut hard, bass actually present, drums dry and snapping rather than buried - which puts them closer in spirit to the Behemoth/Belphegor school of blackened death than to anything more raw or symphonic. Signed to the Brazilian underground imprint Wolves Curse Records, they belong to a generation of Paraná bands that came up after the initial 1990s blackened-death wave, learning equally from the Polish heavyweights and from the older Brazilian extreme metal canon of Krisiun, Rebaelliun and Mystifier. Maringá itself sits roughly halfway between Curitiba and Londrina along the Paraná highway corridor that has produced a disproportionate amount of the country's twenty-first-century extreme metal output, and Hurtgen's persistence - more than a decade in, with no apparent interest in chasing trends - is characteristic of the scene's small-city work ethic. Their songs are concise, militarised and unromantic, the work of musicians who treat blackened death metal less as an aesthetic costume than as a craft to be sharpened slowly over years of provincial gigs, split releases and low-budget recording sessions.
