Humatha churn out the kind of pulverising death/grind that Bahia has been quietly exporting since the late eighties, when Salvador outfits like Mystifier, Headhunter D.C. and Slavery first drew a line between the carnival drum and the blast beat. Operating well outside the southeastern circuit that dominates Brazilian metal coverage, this Bahian unit slots into a regional lineage where Vulcano's filth, Sepultura's primitive bite and a stubbornly DIY work ethic still set the standard. The aesthetic is muddy, sweat-soaked and tropical in the worst way: production that sounds like it bled out in a rehearsal room cooled by a single ceiling fan, drums kicked hard enough to rattle the kit apart, vocals shredded into a wet, syllable-mashing roar. Their writing splits the difference between the early-Carcass goregrind tradition and Brazilian deathgrind progenitors like Rot and Pavor, ricocheting between thirty-second blast-and-snare sprints and slower, dragged sections that owe more to Bolt Thrower or Asphyx than to anything polished. Bahia is a state better known internationally for axe and samba-reggae, but its metal underground - documented by hand in Portuguese-language fanzines, blogs like Bahia Rock Machine and Detector de Metal, and a venue circuit that has always relied on solidarity over infrastructure - has produced consistently nasty, uncompromised extreme music for nearly forty years. Humatha sit squarely inside that lineage: a working-class grind band from the Northeast who play with the urgency of people who know their work is unlikely to be reviewed in English, and who treat that fact as a license rather than a limitation. There is no theatrical posturing here, no atmospheric digressions, just abrasive, lean death metal pushed sideways into grindcore by the demands of a scene where sets are short, gear is borrowed and the next band is already loading in.
