New Democracy

Formed around 2012 in Varginha, a mid-sized city tucked into the rolling hills of southern Minas Gerais, New Democracy emerged from a Brazilian interior scene that has long punched above its weight in extreme music. The quartet built its sound on melodic death metal, but theirs is a hybrid beast, shot through with the swaggering groove of Pantera and Lamb of God and the precision of thrash, then sharpened with the buzzing, harmonized leads that bands like Carcass, Death, and Children of Bodom made gospel. After cutting their teeth with the EPs A New Conception For You To Meet (2014) and Disgrace To The Family (2016), they delivered their debut full-length Death Possession in 2018, announcing a band willing to chase ambition beyond the demo circuit. That ambition crystallized on their 2022 sophomore record The Plague, a concept album set amid ancient Egyptian civilization, trading the usual gore-and-misery tropes for narrative scope and atmosphere. New Democracy operates within a fertile Minas Gerais metal tradition, one that has fed the national underground for decades, and they have steadily worked the live circuit, sharing stages across the region at festivals and club bills alongside peers from across the state. Their songwriting balances brutality and melody with the conviction of a band that grew up worshipping both Gojira's crushing modernity and the soaring grandeur of Angra, Helloween, and Kamelot, an unmistakably Brazilian synthesis of the extreme and the anthemic. Active and still pushing forward, they represent the resilient, self-made spirit of the country's interior metal scene, where geographic distance from the big coastal hubs has never dulled the ferocity or the craft. New Democracy remains one of Varginha's most determined extreme metal exports.
