Neophitus

Neophitus rose from Bertioga, a coastal town on the Baixada Santista, the same stretch of São Paulo shoreline that gave Brazilian metal one of its true founding fathers in Vulcano, the Santos band whose 1981 birth and 1987 debut Om Pushne Namah made them among the first extreme metal acts in all of Latin America. Formed in May 2000, Neophitus inherit that coastal pedigree and channel it into brutal, technically minded death metal threaded with cadenced, morbid passages — a sound vocalist Alex Pinho has framed as a pursuit of brutality executed with precision rather than chaos for its own sake. The band's most striking work is the conceptual EP Anthropophagy Ritualis, built around the cannibalistic rituals of the Tupinambá, the indigenous people who once inhabited this very coastline. Its single 'Tupinambás,' issued with a lyric video in late 2020, narrates, in Pinho's words, the history of the tribe, their rituals, their bravery and their cunning — a theme that turns Brazil's own pre-colonial past into the stuff of death metal mythology, echoing the anthropophagic imagery that has long fascinated the country's artists. The lineup pairs Pinho's vocals with guitarists Pablo Baez and Vinícius de Souza, bassist André Pavani and drummer Nando Morais, a stable unit that lends the music its disciplined heaviness. Working the fertile, deeply rooted São Paulo coastal scene, Neophitus represent a thoughtful strand of Brazilian death metal, one that looks inward to the land's indigenous history for inspiration rather than recycling imported gore tropes. The result is brutal yet literate metal that honours both the savagery of the genre and the singular cultural soil of the Baixada Santista from which it grew.
