Mortuário

Mortuário come from Canoas, an industrial city directly north of Porto Alegre in Rio Grande do Sul, and their music carries the rust and weight of the southern Brazilian working-class belt that has long fed the country's rawest extreme metal. The Porto Alegre metropolitan region — encompassing Canoas, Esteio, Gravataí, and Novo Hamburgo — has been a fertile bed for primitive black/death since the 1990s, with bands cycling through the same circuit of small clubs, occult-leaning fanzines, and DIY tape labels that gave rise to acts like Revogar and a whole stratum of war-metal-adjacent projects across the state. Mortuário's sound sits squarely in that lineage: a deliberately primitive fusion of black and death metal, the production rough on purpose, the riffs leaning on tremolo savagery and mid-paced punishment rather than technicality. The vocals come in as a strangled bark, the drums clatter with a garage urgency, and the whole presentation feels closer to the Brazilian first-wave aesthetic — Sarcófago's INRI, Mutilator, early Vulcano — than to any modern polished extreme idiom. That fidelity to the rawer South American template is not nostalgia so much as continuity; in Rio Grande do Sul, where the line between black and death has always been treated as a bureaucratic fiction, bands like Mortuário keep the original feral spirit alive through cassette releases, split EPs, and the kind of small-press logistics that have defined the gaúcho underground for thirty years.
