Mordorath

Mordorath work in the black metal vein out of Rio de Janeiro, a city whose extreme metal heritage often gets eclipsed in the international narrative by Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte but which has quietly sustained one of the country's more interesting underground scenes for decades. Rio gave Brazilian metal its earliest internationalist outlier in Dorsal Atlantica, the proto-blackened intensity of Apokalyptic Raids, and the long-running brutality of Krisiun's frequent collaborators in the carioca circuit. The city's black metal corner specifically has been shaped by a tension between two impulses: the raw, Sarcofago-descended primitivism that treats fidelity as enemy, and a more atmospheric, second-wave-influenced approach that prizes cold riff architecture. Mordorath sit closer to the latter tradition without abandoning the rawness that marks Brazilian black metal as distinct from its European cousins. Their music leans on tremolo-picked guitar lines and blast-beat foundations, with vocals delivered as a corroded shriek, but the songwriting allows the riffs space to develop rather than burying them in a wash of static. That hybrid sensibility is increasingly common among Rio's newer black metal bands, who grew up with both Mayhem records and the cassette-tape ferocity of their own city's first wave, and who do not feel obliged to choose between the two. The Rio scene operates largely outside the major club circuit, in smaller venues and DIY shows that draw the same few dozen committed faces, and bands like Mordorath are the reason that infrastructure continues to exist. They contribute to a black metal ecosystem in the city that has never been fashionable and has never needed to be.
