Molested God

Molested God formed in 2015 in Teresina, the inland capital of Piaui, which is roughly the last place a casual observer would expect to find a death metal band willing to call itself that. Northeastern Brazil's metal scene has always been a study in isolation: thousands of kilometres from Sao Paulo's industry, several time zones in spirit from Rio's clubs, and historically underserved by the labels, zines and distros that built the southern scenes. Teresina sits even further from the centre than Recife or Fortaleza, which makes the persistence of a band like Molested God a small act of stubbornness. They play traditional death metal, themes of blasphemy, death and the undead, the kind of straight-line approach that descends from the late-80s Florida and Brazilian schools rather than any of death metal's more recent rebrandings. The riffs are tremolo-driven and tonally murky, the vocals work a guttural register rather than a shriek, and the drumming favours mid-paced double-bass churn over constant blast. None of this is fashionable, and that is partly the point. Piaui's metal scene survives through events like Metal Solidario and a small network of bars, rehearsal rooms and internet radio outlets such as Full Rock Station, all of which operate on the assumption that nobody outside the state is paying attention. Molested God fit naturally into that ecosystem, an unsigned band recording and releasing on their own terms because there is no other realistic option, and because the genre's old-school template rewards exactly that kind of self-reliance. They keep northeastern death metal alive in a city most international metal coverage has never bothered to map.
