Mityma

Mityma operate from Rio de Janeiro, working a sound that splits the difference between sludge metal's tar-thick low end, the murk of blackened doom and a faintly hallucinatory stoner haze. Rio's extreme metal community has always sat in an odd, productive shadow of Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte. The city produced foundational acts like Dorsal Atlantica and Apokalyptic Raids, but its more recent identity has been forged at street level, in the DIY rehearsal spaces and small venues scattered across the Zona Norte and the suburban grid, where doom, sludge and atmospheric black metal have all found a stubborn foothold. Mityma belong to that quietly fertile scene. Their music is built around enormous, dragging riffs that bend toward dissonance rather than groove, layered with vocals pitched somewhere between sludge bark and black metal rasp. There is a deliberate refusal to commit to a single genre vocabulary; the songs lurch through stoner-influenced passages that suddenly tighten into tremolo-picked black metal sections before collapsing back into doomy lurch. That blackened-doom hybrid has become a recognisable Brazilian dialect over the past decade, and Rio in particular has produced a small constellation of bands working that vein, drawing equally from Eyehategod's swamp-belly heaviness and the colder atmospherics of European blackened sludge. The humidity and density of the city seep into the recordings; the guitars sound like they were tracked in a stairwell, the drums like they were captured at distance. Mityma's appeal is precisely that refusal to clean any of it up. They make music that sounds like Rio, not the postcard Rio, but the harder, wetter, more claustrophobic version that the city's underground has spent decades documenting.
