Mioma

Mioma operate from Minas Gerais, the state that gave heavy music two of its loudest origin myths: the gut-punch primitivism of Sarcofago and the war-machine thrash that turned a teenage Sepultura into a global force. That heritage is impossible to escape for any extreme band working in the region, and Mioma seem to understand it less as a burden than a license. Their music threads together death metal aggression, thrash velocity and the lurching, percussive heaviness of groove metal, the same hybrid vocabulary that Belo Horizonte and the surrounding interior have been cross-pollinating for forty years. The band has been kicking around the Mineiro underground since at least the mid-2010s, with an EP from 2015 marking an early statement of intent. The songwriting is built for live damage: blast-fed verses snap into half-time mosh sections, riffs are stripped of ornament and bent toward maximum physical impact, and the vocals work the lower-register bark that became the lingua franca of post-Roots Brazilian extremity. There is no posturing about regional purity here, no attempt to slot neatly under one banner. Mioma's identity is in the seams between styles, in the way a thrash break can collapse into a sludgy breakdown and pull back out into a death metal blast inside a single track. They belong to a generation of Minas Gerais bands raised on Sepultura and Sarcofago records they did not have to discover, that were simply in the air, and their willingness to muddy those influences with groove and hardcore inflection feels less like dilution and more like honest inheritance. In a state where the bar for extreme metal was set absurdly high before most of these musicians were born, Mioma write riffs that earn their place at the show.
