Medicine for Pain

Medicine for Pain emerges from São Paulo, the densest and most stylistically diverse metal market in South America, and works the groove-thrash seam that has been a Brazilian specialty since Sepultura's Chaos A.D. realigned the global understanding of what thrash could sound like with a Brazilian accent. The self-titled 2017 full-length is the band's defining statement to date, an album that locks into the down-tempo, syncopated riffing vocabulary established by Sepultura's mid-1990s pivot and later codified by Pantera and the broader Pantera-adjacent groove movement, while keeping enough Bay Area thrash attack in the picking hand to avoid sliding into nu-metal territory. That balance is a familiar position for São Paulo bands of the 2010s, where the Torture Squad lineage of professional, internationally-aware extreme metal coexists with a much larger working-class scene of groove-metal and thrash bands playing the city's bar circuit in neighborhoods like Vila Mariana, Bixiga, and the venues along Avenida Augusta. Medicine for Pain belongs to that second tier: not the export-grade Krisiun or Nervosa stratum, but the dependable mid-card of São Paulo's metal economy, the sort of band that helps the scene function week to week. Their music carries the marks of having been built on stages rather than in studios, with arrangements that favor mosh-friendly tempo shifts and choruses sized for a crowd response, and the self-titled record is best heard as a snapshot of where São Paulo groove-thrash sat in the late 2010s: still indebted to its 1990s forebears, still in conversation with the international thrash revival, still hungry.
