Mauthausen

Mauthausen formed in 2022 in Londrina, the second-largest city of Paraná and the cultural hub of the state's northern half, a place historically overshadowed by the heavier metal infrastructure of Curitiba but with its own steady underground stretching back decades. The band takes its name from the Austrian concentration camp, signaling from the outset a preoccupation with brutality, atrocity, and historical horror that has long been a fixture of Brazilian death metal lyricism since Krisiun and Rebaelliun pulled the country's extreme scene toward an internationally legible, war-and-violence-themed sound in the late 1990s. The two 2023 singles, Punisher and Asylum, establish the band's working idiom: lean, mid-to-fast death metal with the riffing logic of Floridian and European DM rather than the tribal-thrash hybrids that defined Brazil's earliest exports. There is none of the proggy or melodic-death drift that some of Paraná's better-known acts (such as Krow or the Curitiba melodic-death circuit) have explored over the past decade; Mauthausen instead works the more orthodox seam of the genre, where blast beats, palm-muted gallops, and growled vocals do the heavy lifting. Coming out of Londrina specifically situates them at a remove from the Curitiba-centric Paraná scene, which has produced everything from Headhunter D.C.'s grindcore to long-running thrash acts; northern Paraná tends to support a self-sufficient gig circuit that draws bands up from São Paulo state and across the Paraguayan border, and Mauthausen's quick string of 2023 singles suggests a project intent on building catalog and live presence within that regional network rather than waiting for a debut LP cycle.
