Legista

Legista works out of Joinville, the industrial city in northern Santa Catarina whose underground metal scene has quietly produced some of Brazil's most committed extreme music for over three decades. The defining act of the city remains Flesh Grinder, the goregrind unit formed in 1993 whose discography (Anatomy & Surgery in 1997, S.P.L.A.T.T.E.R. in 1999, Libido Corporis in 2001, and continuing through a seventh full-length in 2025) helped establish Joinville as a national capital of pathological gore-themed death metal, trading splits with Brazil's Lymphatic Phlegm and international peers across the goregrind diaspora. The city sustains an active community through the long-running Armageddon Metal Fest and the Metal Joinville collective, and Legista clearly draws from that local well. The band is a one-person death metal project whose 2019 LP Dismorfias leans hard into the splatter/gore aesthetic Flesh Grinder helped codify, with track titles like Costotomo referencing surgical and forensic terminology, the band name itself meaning forensic examiner or coroner in Portuguese. Stylistically Legista works within the old-school death metal vocabulary descended from Autopsy, Carcass-era grindcore-death, and the brutal-cavernous mid-1990s sound, applying it to a body-horror lyrical concept that places the project firmly within the Brazilian gore tradition stretching back through Rotten Sound, Mortician's international peers, and the dense network of one-man and two-piece projects that populate the Bandcamp brazilian-death-metal tag. As a solo endeavor with a clearly defined conceptual frame and a substantial debut LP, Legista represents the durability and self-sufficiency of the Joinville underground a generation after Flesh Grinder first opened the city's catacomb door.
