Kramunha

Kramunha worked the death/thrash crossover out of Rio de Janeiro, a city whose metal lineage runs through Dorsal Atlântica's foundational thrash work of the mid-1980s, the Brazilian Ritual Records orbit, and a smaller but tenacious underground that has always operated in the shadow of São Paulo's larger metal infrastructure and Belo Horizonte's Cogumelo-anchored extreme metal hegemony. Carioca metal carries a distinct flavor: shaped by Rio's compressed geography, its mixture of beachfront and favela venues, and a scene where rehearsal spaces and gigs cluster around the Centro, Lapa and the Zona Norte more than around any single anchor district. Kramunha's death/thrash hybrid places them in the lineage of Brazilian bands that refused to settle on one side of the thrash-to-death divide — a tradition that runs from Sepultura's Schizophrenia and Beneath the Remains through Mutilator and into the carioca-specific lineage of Dorsal Atlântica's later death-tinged work, Claustrofobia's grinding crossover and the broader Brazilian extreme metal cohort that emerged in the 1990s and 2000s. Working in a city where venues like Circo Voador and Fundição Progresso anchor the larger end of the scene while smaller rooms like the long-running Cine Rio bar sustain the underground, Kramunha would have shared bills with the carioca death metal community that includes acts like Krighsu and the broader Rio extreme metal underground. Their split-up status is the typical trajectory for cariocas working in the most uncompromising end of the spectrum: a finite run of demos, gigs and tape/CD-R releases before members disperse into the city's tightly networked talent pool, where everyone has played in three or four bands and the next configuration is always already taking shape.
