Karnnage

Karnnage was a now-defunct São Paulo extreme metal outfit whose trajectory traced a familiar Brazilian arc — beginning in the death/thrash idiom that has defined the capital's scene since Sepultura, Sarcófago, and Vulcano set the template in the mid-1980s, then drifting toward second-wave black metal as the project matured. São Paulo is the densest extreme-metal hub in South America; its venues range from Carbono and Hangar 110 down through tiny ABC-paulista dives, and the city's bands operate inside a thick web of split releases, fanzines, and tape-trading labels that keep cross-pollination between sub-styles unusually fluid. Karnnage's evolution from blackened thrash toward outright black metal is a route familiar to anyone who has followed the lineage that connects early Sarcófago's filthy speed-driven attack to the colder, more atmospheric black metal that rose out of São Paulo in the 1990s and 2000s — bands such as Bestial Holocaust, Goatpenis, Mystifier, and later Ad Baculum. Their early work, judging by the regional context in which they circulated, would have leaned on the staccato riff geometry and hoarse barked vocals associated with classic Brazilian war-metal and blackened thrash, while later material moved toward longer-form tremolo passages and the dry, treble-heavy production aesthetic favored by the city's black metal underground. By the time the project dissolved, Karnnage had inhabited a transitional space that the Brazilian scene has historically excelled at — a band that refused to specialize, choosing instead the more punishing freedom of moving across extreme metal's internal borders.
