Into the Crypt

Into the Crypt is a black metal duo formed in 2019 in Rio das Ostras, a coastal city on Rio de Janeiro state's northern shore — a place far enough removed from Rio's capital metal circuit to develop its own gravitational pull, and close enough to be plugged into the wider fluminense underground. The duo format itself is a deliberate aesthetic choice within black metal, descending from a lineage that includes Darkthrone, Inquisition and a long line of Brazilian one-and-two-piece projects that have prized atmospheric singularity over band-room democracy. Their declared lyrical territory — occultism, the left-hand path, and misanthropy — slots them into orthodox second-wave black metal terrain rather than the post-black or atmospheric strains that have dominated Brazilian metal press in recent years through projects like Kaatayra or Bríi. That orthodoxy connects them to a deep Rio de Janeiro black metal history: the state hosted some of the earliest Brazilian black metal scenes, from the proto-extreme work of Sextrash and Holocausto's regional cousins, through the cold, ritualistic projects that have continued to emerge from the fluminense interior. Their 2020 demo, released in a hand-numbered edition of 66 CDs in line with classic black metal cult-edition tradition, signals exactly the kind of unsigned, independent, ritual-object approach that has defined the genre's underground for three decades. Operating two-handed, in a small coastal city, with limited print runs and no label apparatus, Into the Crypt is the kind of project that makes the Brazilian black metal map look the way it does: a constellation of isolated, fiercely self-sufficient cells scattered across the country, communicating through tape trades, distros, and the slow word-of-mouth of the underground.
