Influxxo

Influxxo operates out of Belo Horizonte, the Minas Gerais capital that academic and journalistic accounts repeatedly describe as the South American capital of extreme metal. That is not a casual claim: Sepultura, Sarcófago, Holocausto, Mutilator, Chakal, and Overdose all coalesced here in the mid-1980s, and the city's Cogumelo Produções label, with its Warfare Noise compilations, became the primary export vehicle for the brutal, blast-driven Brazilian sound that ended up influencing the Norwegian second wave. To play death metal or grindcore in Belo Horizonte four decades later is to work inside that lineage whether or not a band claims it explicitly, and Influxxo is recognizably a product of it: the BH death-grind tradition runs from Holocausto's filthy crust-metal hybrid through Sarcófago's velocity obsession to the present-day grindcore scene that includes acts like Expurgo and the wider mineiro underground catalogued by zines like Oganpazan. Influxxo's stylistic positioning, sitting between death metal's riff vocabulary and grindcore's compression and speed, follows the template laid down by Repulsion, early Napalm Death, and Carcass and adapted to a Brazilian context that has always preferred its extremity bone-dry and unornamented. The mineiro grindcore current tends to be more politically loaded than its northern counterparts, drawing on Crass-derived anarcho-punk as much as on metal proper, and operating through a network of DIY venues, fanzines, and small labels that has persisted in the city since the 1980s. Influxxo's continued activity through Bandcamp and the local underground places them alongside other working-class BH grind and death acts who keep the city's claim to extreme-metal centrality alive without leaning on Sepultura's globalized brand.
