Inferms

Inferms has a geographic arc that tells you something about Brazilian extreme metal in microcosm: the band started in Ananindeua, in the Belém metropolitan region of Pará, and later relocated to Curitiba in Paraná, tracing the same north-to-south migratory pattern that has carried so many Amazonian musicians toward the southern industrial cities where infrastructure, venues, and labels concentrate. Their roots in Pará place them downstream of the foundational Belém scene that produced Stress, often credited with releasing Brazil's first heavy metal LP in 1982, and the long-running grindcore institution Baixo Calão, active since 1996 and the dominant exporter of Amazonian grind to the rest of the country. That north-coast tradition leans toward a punk-inflected, hardcore-rooted variety of grindcore, drawing on Repulsion, Napalm Death, and Brazilian forebears like Ratos de Porão as much as on death metal proper. Once relocated to Curitiba, the band entered an entirely different ecosystem: the Paraná capital is one of Brazil's most active extreme-music cities, host to a dense network of small venues, fanzines, and DIY labels, and the regular stop for international tours from Napalm Death and Krisiun. Death-grind in Curitiba tends to be more technical and clean-recorded than its northern equivalents, reflecting the city's better-equipped studios and its larger audience for European-style death metal. Inferms sits at the intersection of those two worlds, carrying Pará's raw, riff-first grind sensibility into a southern scene that prizes precision, and the band's continued activity makes them a useful waypoint between two regional traditions that rarely interact directly. Their Bandcamp presence places them within the broader DIY Latin American grindcore network that has flourished outside major-label structures, alongside peers across Brazil's north, south, and Cone Sur neighbors.
