In Nomine Satanis

Active since 2003, In Nomine Satanis is a long-running black metal trio from São Luís in Maranhão, the historic colonial port city whose underground metal scene has spent two decades carving out one of the most stubbornly independent corners of the Brazilian Northeast extreme metal map. The current lineup writes itself as a ritualized unit: Hell's Abomination on bass, Insane Abomination on drums, and XES Abomination handling vocals and guitars, the shared surname a deliberate nod to the Norwegian second-wave tradition of mask, pseudonym and abandoned civilian identity. Their 2017 full-length Ajoelhado No Altar Da Ignorância, issued on CD through small Brazilian underground channels, lays out the band's thematic spine across tracks like Besta Interior, Destruindo o Ideal Cristão, A Praga da Destruição and Senhor das Escaras, supplemented by a cover of Sabbat's My War in a clear acknowledgement of the band's first-wave roots. Musically the band hews to a hot, treble-forward Brazilian black metal template that traces its lineage straight back to Sarcófago and Mystifier, more raw and rock-driven than the colder Scandinavian school, with mid-paced riffs giving way to blast-beat eruptions and vocals delivered in a corrosive blackened rasp. Politically the band is unusually explicit for the genre: they have publicly distanced themselves from fascism, Nazism, and racist, misogynist and xenophobic narratives, instead defining their satanism as an anti-clerical, individualist counter-position. After more than twenty years operating from one of Brazil's most isolated metal cities, they remain a fixture of the Northeast underground bill circuit.
