Hostilidade

Hostilidade come out of Brasília, the planned federal capital whose stark modernist architecture and political climate have, perhaps counterintuitively, produced one of Brazil's most consistently aggressive extreme metal scenes. The Distrito Federal and its surrounding satellite cities have been a breeding ground for hardcore, punk, and metal since the 1980s — a scene that has fed directly into the national bloodstream through bands rooted in the city's contradictions: bureaucratic order outside, organized contempt within. Hostilidade — Portuguese for hostility, a name that wastes no effort on subtlety — work the deathgrind seam of that scene, fusing the velocity of grindcore with the heft and structure of death metal in the lineage that runs from Krisiun's Brasília origins through the modern brasiliense extreme underground documented by zines and labels covering the Cerrado wave. Theirs is the kind of band that thrives in the city's small-venue circuit, where short, violent sets are the currency, and where the audience expects to be assaulted rather than entertained. Stylistically they draw from the discipline of Brazilian death metal — tight, riff-driven, rhythmically locked rather than chaotic — and weld it to grindcore's compression and refusal of filler, producing songs that hit hard, end fast, and leave the listener disoriented. The DF scene has long been comparatively overlooked in international coverage that fixates on São Paulo and the south, but acts like Hostilidade are exactly the reason it deserves attention: bands operating without the safety net of a large local industry, sustained instead by a genuine local appetite for extreme music and a refusal to soften the edges for outside ears.
