Hortus Nullus

Hortus Nullus operate out of Uberlândia, the inland Minas Gerais city that sits on the high plains of the Triângulo Mineiro — a region whose cultural identity has long shaped one of Brazil's most distinctive doom and death-doom corridors. Minas Gerais has produced more than its share of slow, weighty extreme music, and Hortus Nullus, formed in 2009, fit comfortably into that mineiro tradition of meditative heaviness: aggressive but cadenced, dragged-out rather than blast-driven, atmospheric without ever surrendering the riff. Their early recordings — the 2009 tracks Infelix Fatum Sordidus and Anima Putridus — already pointed toward the band's mature voice, which finally crystallized on the 2014 full-length Anima Putridus, an album local zines like Cerrado Rock praised for its dark-ambient atmosphere, melancholic construction, and the morbid intrusion of death metal into what is otherwise a doom record. The keyboard and organ work give the music a sacral, ruined-cathedral quality that pairs naturally with the band's lyrical preoccupations: occultism, nihilism, and the rejection of religion, the holy trinity of Brazilian extreme metal's anti-clerical wing. They followed Anima Putridus with the 2016 album Requiem and the 2017 singles In Aeternum and Nihil, continuing to refine a sound that draws on classic European death-doom — early Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride — but is anchored in the specifically Latin American sensibility for moral exhaustion and theological dread.
