Gorezia

Gorezia formed in 2012 in Ceará's interior, eventually working out of Ipu - the small town in the state's northwest that sits closer in spirit to Piauí than to the coastal capital Fortaleza, and the kind of place where a band has to build its own scene from scratch because there isn't one waiting. Ceará's metal underground has always been a long-distance affair, with bands like Lamus and Mortify out of Fortaleza setting the regional benchmark and dozens of smaller acts trading tapes and CD-Rs across the sertão, and Gorezia have plugged themselves into that network rather than aiming for the south-east label radar. The band's defining statement is the 2017 EP "Vaginal Mutilation," recorded and mixed at Studio I in Ipu in March of that year and released independently in May. It's a gore-coded death metal record in the old Brazilian tradition - the Mutilator / Brutal Distortion / early Krisiun current of bloody-cover, demo-art aesthetics rather than the cleaner US slam template - and it surfaced through the same low-fi distribution channels that keep northeastern Brazilian extreme metal alive: tape and disc through small distros, physical sales through Heavy Metal Rock and similar online merchants, and write-ups on regional zines. Lyrically and visually the band leans into the gore-grind iconography Brazilian death metal has used since the late 80s, but the actual playing has more in common with mid-paced death metal than goregrind proper, which is how Metal Archives catalogues them. Five years between formation and first proper release is normal for a band that far from the southern hubs, and Gorezia have stayed active in the same low-output, long-arc way that defines most of the northeastern scene.
