Escória

Escória — Portuguese for 'scum' or 'dregs' — is a São Paulo-based metallic hardcore band whose self-released full-length 'The Living Hurt' surfaced on Bandcamp on April 26, 2005, documenting a lineup of vocalist Bruno Teixeira, guitarist Estevam Romera, bassist Flávio Logullo, and drummer Thiago Sonho. The record traffics in jagged, brutal hardcore that borders on noise at its most punishing moments, with every element pushed deep into the red — a sound that places the band squarely within the metal-leaning wing of the paulistano hardcore tradition rather than the older crustpunk or street-punk strains that defined the city's first wave. São Paulo's hardcore scene has been one of Latin America's most consequential since the early 1980s, when bands such as Cólera, Olho Seco, Lobotomia and Ratos de Porão transformed the city into a continental hub for punk and its harder offshoots; Escória inherits that geography but pulls the style toward the metallic, dissonant end of the spectrum that flourished in the SP underground through the 2000s, sharing aesthetic ground with the city's later metalcore, powerviolence, and crossover-thrash projects rather than with melodic hardcore. The name itself functions as a confrontational mission statement, embracing the lumpen identification typical of Brazilian extreme hardcore: a refusal of respectability politics framed in the same vocabulary São Paulo's punks have been deploying since the genre's first explosion at the Sesc Pompéia and ABC region squats. Escória remains a fixture for collectors of mid-2000s underground Brazilian metallic hardcore and a representative example of how São Paulo's hardcore lineage continued mutating long after the genre's first chroniclers had moved on.
