Dying Out

Dying Out is a death metal band from Nova Friburgo, a Swiss-founded mountain town in the cooler highlands of Rio de Janeiro state, formed in 2025 and currently active. Although extremely new, the band has already issued two short releases, Faith Reduced to Rot and the EP Christ Rejected, the latter of which surfaced on the international tape-trading and download circuit and pushed the project beyond purely local circulation. Their lyrical orientation, satanism, occultism, anti-Christianity, catastrophe, and apocalypse, places them firmly inside the lineage of classic blasphemous South American death metal rather than the more polished modern strains, and the band has been tagged on Bandcamp under both old school and technical death metal, suggesting an approach rooted in late-eighties and early-nineties templates rather than slam or modern brutality. Nova Friburgo sits at a strange remove from the dominant Rio capital metal scene but has produced its own pocket of extreme music, most visibly Sutura, a death/black band from the same town that draws on Scandinavian and Brazilian extreme influences, and the broader region hosts the Friburgo Rock Festival, billed as the largest rock and heavy metal festival in Rio de Janeiro state. That cooler, smaller-town context, distinct from the Carioca capital's underground of Lacerated and Carbonized, Hatefulmurder, Velho, and Handsaw, gives Dying Out a slightly different scene gravity, drawing from interior Brazilian extreme metal rather than the beachside Rio noise. The band is still building a discography and a defined identity, but its early material signals a deliberate alignment with the rawer end of Brazilian death metal tradition, the same vein that produced Mystifier and the Cogumelo Records lineage, rather than the cleaner studio sound common to current global death metal.
