Diabrera

Diabrera is a thrash and groove metal band from Chapecó, in the extreme west of Santa Catarina, operating in a regional scene known to its participants as the Velho Oeste underground. The band maintains an active SoundCloud presence under the handle oficialdiabrera and a self-titled YouTube channel, through which it has circulated its material including the track Cadáver. The Chapecó scene from which Diabrera emerges is comparatively young by Brazilian metal standards but well-documented: regional blogs such as Velho Oeste Underground and Bandas SC Rock Clube have spent the last decade chronicling a steady output of heavy bands from the western part of Santa Catarina, while broader catarinense coverage from outlets like ndmais and Collectors Room has tracked the state's emergence as a credible metal centre since the 1990s, when festivals began filling the annual calendar. Diabrera's stylistic positioning between thrash and groove places it in a recognisably Brazilian lineage: the country's foundational thrash sound, traced in the Brazilian thrash metal Wikipedia entry from Belo Horizonte and São Paulo through Sepultura, Sarcófago and Dorsal Atlântica, gave way in the 1990s to a heavier groove-laden hybrid most famously codified by Sepultura's Chaos A.D. and Roots. That hybrid remains the template for much regional Brazilian heavy music outside the major capitals, and Diabrera's choice of a Portuguese-language thematic vocabulary, including the unambiguous Cadáver, locates it within that nationally specific dialect of thrash rather than any imported template. The band remains active and continues to release material independently.
