Devilkraft

Devilkraft is a São Paulo-based black/death metal outfit operating in the long shadow of Brazil's first-wave extreme scene. Their 2021 full-length Black Book of Goetia, released digitally through the band's own Bandcamp and circulated in the underground via portals such as Metal Area and BoxAlbums, is a nine-track exercise in the kind of old-school savagery that has defined the Brazilian extreme underground for forty years. The band has been candid about its lineage, citing Dissection, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Archgoat and Morbid Angel as primary reference points, and the record bears that out: blasting, riff-driven death metal coloured by the corpse-painted austerity of the Swedish and Finnish black/death traditions, rather than the cleaner Gothenburg sound that dominates much of contemporary South American extreme music. The album's title alone, drawn from the Lemegeton's Lesser Key of Solomon and its catalogue of seventy-two demons, situates Devilkraft within a long Brazilian fascination with grimoire literature that runs from Mystifier's Goetia (1993) through to contemporary São Paulo demonological projects. That São Paulo connection matters. The city remains the operational hub for the Brazilian Ritual Records circle and the annual Brazilian Ritual concert event, the local label-and-festival ecosystem that has carried forward the war metal and black/death tradition from Sarcófago, Mystifier and Holocausto into a new generation. Devilkraft sits comfortably within that orbit without being formally tied to it: a project whose riff vocabulary, occult lyrical thematics and DIY release approach all point to the same underground network of tape traders, cassette labels and small-press fanzines that has sustained São Paulo's extreme scene since the 1980s. They remain active and continue to circulate the album through Bandcamp and YouTube uploads of the full LP.
