Deathena

Deathena come from Londrina, the second-largest city in Paraná and a long-running stronghold of Brazilian underground extremity, home to a particularly dense network of grindcore, crust and death metal acts including Terrorsphere, Misantra, Hereticae, Rejected, Chronic Oral Diarrhea, Degradação Humana, Greve and Krocödil Doomdee, and historically tied to the Londrinoise festival that has been the meeting ground for the city's punk and metal contingents. Listed on Encyclopaedia Metallum as an active unsigned band from Londrina, Paraná, Deathena fold death metal, thrash, crossover and grindcore into a single satirical project rather than committing to one stylistic camp, a fluidity that places them closer in spirit to the older crossover thrash lineage (Ratos de Porão, Lobotomia, Dorsal Atlântica) than to the polished tech-death now dominant in southern Brazil. Their full-length 'Kelmon Images' (2022), released through Bandcamp, makes the satirical thrust unmistakable: track titles such as 'An intro almost as lazy as those who share anything without researching (but better),' 'Judas(nina) Priest,' 'Give Seas, Pulls Teeth,' 'Go to Cunezueba!,' 'Paint it Black the Climate,' 'Polly Trinity,' 'From Obliteration to Jacarelization' and 'Fakin' Bird' read as deliberate, knowing send-ups of Brazilian political discourse, conspiracy culture and the country's online disinformation ecosystem, with riff and song titles glued together in the same scrambled-English manner Brazilian crossover bands have used since the eighties. The conceptual figure of 'Kelmon' functions as a composite caricature of the Brazilian reactionary archetype, lampooned through what might politely be called highly specific lyrical themes. The band remains independent and operates inside the broader Londrina/Maringá metal axis, where small DIY shows and bandcamp self-releases continue to define the local circuit.
