Caixão Podre

Caixão Podre — literally Rotten Coffin in Portuguese — formed in São Paulo in 2020, dropping into the country's largest and most chaotically diverse metal market at the exact moment that pandemic isolation was forcing the Brazilian underground back into bedrooms, four-tracks, and Bandcamp. The band traffic in death metal welded to grindcore, a combination with deep São Paulo lineage: the city and its industrial outskirts birthed Ratos de Porão's crossover, Mutilation's early death-grind, and an entire ecosystem of brutal death and goregrind acts that have cycled through venues like Hangar 110 and the old Manifesto Bar for decades. Their horror-driven aesthetic — coffin imagery, putrefaction motifs, the kind of graveyard-poster art that points straight back at Autopsy and Repulsion — locates them inside the gore-and-fuzz wing of the scene rather than the technical brutal-death camp that São Paulo also exports. Unsigned and operating independently, Caixão Podre belong to the layer of the city's metal community that survives on splits, DIY shows in São Paulo's east-zone bars, and tape-label runs out of small shops in the Galeria do Rock; it is a corner of the scene where a band's catalog and a band's flyer history are roughly the same document. They share name-DNA with a small Brazilian sub-genealogy of coffin-themed extreme bands — projects like Caixão and Cron Demom's Caixão e Vela Preta — that collectively treat funereal Portuguese vocabulary as a shared aesthetic vocabulary. For Caixão Podre, that vocabulary is also a thesis: a young São Paulo death-grind unit committed to keeping the city's rot loud, fast, and locally pressed.
