Old Crow Cry

Old Crow Cry is a one-person folk-black metal project from Lages, the highland city at the heart of Santa Catarina's serra catarinense, where cold winters, pine forests, and a rugged frontier culture set southern Brazil apart from the tropical clichés of the country's image. That landscape is the project's true subject: rather than importing the wintry mythology of Scandinavia wholesale, Old Crow Cry turns the folk-black template toward the celebration of southern Brazil itself, its highland scenery, its rural heritage, and the particular melancholy of the planalto. Lages is no stranger to metal, having birthed Orquídea Negra, one of the state's most traditional bands, decades ago and hosting the region's rock festivals, and Santa Catarina more broadly ranks among Brazil's most fertile metal states, with active scenes scattered across dozens of mountain and coastal towns. Working alone, the artist behind Old Crow Cry follows the solitary-auteur model that folk and atmospheric black metal have made their own, where a single visionary handles every instrument and shapes a complete world from the ground up. The music likely interlaces the genre's familiar tools, tremolo-picked guitar, blast and mid-paced drive, and rasped vocals, with folk melody and acoustic texture that evoke open country and ancestral memory, the same impulse that drives Brazil's celebrated wave of nature-rooted black metal toward regional rather than borrowed identity. The result is black metal as a love letter to place, fierce and pastoral at once, the cry of the old crow echoing across the highlands.
