Out of the windswept pampas of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil's southernmost state, Obskkuroeoser conjures a strain of raw black metal steeped in anti-cosmic dread. The mangled, deliberately illegible name is itself a statement of intent, the kind of orthographic violence that has long been a calling card of the underground's most uncompromising cells, where readability is sacrificed to atmosphere and to a refusal of the marketplace. Gaúcho extreme metal carries a particular weight: this is the land where Brazilian black and death metal first took root in the deep south during the late 1980s and 1990s, a frontier culture shaped by cold winters, vast open country, and a fiercely self-reliant DIY ethos far from the industry centers of São Paulo and Rio. Obskkuroeoser draws on that lineage while orienting itself toward the anti-cosmic and theistic Satanic current that swept through black metal in the 2000s, the lineage of chaos-gnosis and devotional darkness that treats the genre less as music than as ritual praxis.
