Nothurian

Out of Campos dos Goytacazes, the inland sugar-and-oil city in the north of Rio de Janeiro state, with ties reaching toward the metropolitan engine of São Paulo, Nothurian trades in atmospheric black metal wrapped around dark-fantasy storytelling. Theirs is the strain of the genre that treats an album less as a collection of songs than as a chapter in some imagined chronicle, the kind of grim, world-building approach that has long drawn black metal toward the realms of myth, ruin, and the otherworldly. Campos dos Goytacazes is not a name that surfaces often in discussions of Brazilian extreme metal, a conversation usually dominated by Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, and Rio's capital, and that very marginality is telling: Nothurian represents the deep underground, the bands operating far from any scene hub, self-releasing and self-mythologizing in the great DIY tradition that animates South American black metal. Active and ongoing, the project leans on the established vocabulary of atmospheric black metal, tremolo-picked melodies stretched over blast beats, shifts between blistering intensity and brooding, spacious passages, vocals rasped from somewhere beyond the human, all marshaled in service of a fantastical lyrical vision rather than the war-metal savagery or the Sarcófago-bred first-wave filth that Brazil exported to the world. There is romance in the geography, a band conjuring imaginary dark kingdoms from a working Brazilian city far removed from frost and northern forest, reminding listeners that black metal's atmosphere is a state of mind more than a climate.
