Murrada

Murrada come from Santarém, a city of roughly 300,000 people on the Tapajós River in the state of Pará — deep in the Brazilian Amazon, more than 700 kilometers by river from Belém and effectively unreachable by road from the rest of the country. That geography matters. Santarém's metal scene is one of the most remote in Brazil, a small community of musicians and fans operating in a city where access to gear, records and touring acts is genuinely scarce, and where the existence of an extreme-metal band requires a level of stubborn dedication that bands in São Paulo or Rio simply do not need to muster. Formed in 2016, Murrada play grindcore welded to thrash with a crossover sensibility, working in the lineage that runs from Napalm Death through Brazilian standard-bearers like Rot, Hutt and Test but inflected with the regional politics of the Amazon — a region where oppression, deforestation and the violent dispossession of Indigenous land are not abstract subjects but daily reality. Their lyrical focus on oppression and social issues fits that context; northern Brazilian extreme metal carries a particular charge precisely because the social and ecological violence the music protests is being committed in plain view. The crossover element is what makes them function as a live band — short, fast, blunt songs that translate in a small Santarém venue the same way they translate at a hardcore matinee in São Paulo. Murrada are part of what makes Brazilian grindcore one of the most geographically distributed extreme scenes on the planet, with active cells in cities most international listeners could not locate on a map.
