Misannthrophie

Misannthrophie come out of Embu Guacu, a municipality on the rural southern edge of the Sao Paulo metropolitan sprawl, the kind of half-forested borderland where the city's grid finally gives way to mata atlantica and dirt roads. That geography matters. Raw black metal in Brazil has always carried a particular character, less interested in the polished Norwegian template than in the heat-warped lo-fi tradition that runs from Vulcano through Sarcofago's primitivism and into the cassette-tape underground that has thrived in Sao Paulo state for decades. Misannthrophie work squarely inside that lineage. Their sound is thin, ugly, and intentional, with treble-shredded guitars, drums recorded under what sounds like a single overhead mic and vocals that move between hoarse shrieks and exhausted snarls. There is no concession to clarity, no flirtation with melodic black metal's prettier registers. The point is the discomfort itself. Sao Paulo's underground is vast enough to support every conceivable strain of extreme metal, and the raw black metal corner has stayed stubbornly DIY: hand-dubbed tapes, blurry photocopied logos, shows in basements and rehearsal rooms rather than the larger clubs that book the city's more visible thrash and death bands. Misannthrophie's deliberately corroded production places them inside that corner, alongside a national network of one-or-two-person projects who treat fidelity as a moral compromise. The misanthropy in the name is not posture either; Brazilian raw black metal has long traded in a kind of bleakness specific to peripheries, a refusal of the official optimism of the country that surrounds it. From the wooded outskirts of greater Sao Paulo, Misannthrophie keep that older underground tradition alive on its own ungenerous terms.
