Minato no Nezumi

Minato no Nezumi emerge from Santos, the salt-corroded port city anchoring the Baixada Santista, a coastal stretch of Sao Paulo state that has been quietly cultivating one of Brazil's most resilient extreme music scenes since the early 1980s. Santos is the city that gave Brazilian metal Vulcano, one of the country's foundational extreme bands and a direct ancestor of the blacker, dirtier strains that would later define South American underground heaviness, and its ecosystem has continued to support a wide spectrum of punk, hardcore, thrash, and slower, doomier pursuits through venues like the now-mythic Heavy Metal nightclub and contemporary holdouts like Studio Rock Cafe. Minato no Nezumi work in that slower, sludgier territory, dragging the riff vocabulary of NOLA sludge and first-wave doom across the humidity and rust of a working harbor town. The band's name — Japanese for roughly 'harbor rat' — fits both their geography and their aesthetic: scavenging, opportunistic, comfortable in the grime. Their recorded output to date includes a live LP captured at Studio Rock Cafe Santos around 2016 and a 'Raw Reharsal' demo from the same period, both leaning into the room-noise, tape-bleed fidelity that the genre has always treated as a feature rather than a flaw. They share a city with veterans like Chemical Disaster and Surra, but where those bands push into thrash and grind speed, Minato no Nezumi take the opposite route, letting tempos rot and feedback hang, anchoring the heavier, more punishing end of the Baixada's enduring metal continuum.
