Memórias Póstumas

Memórias Póstumas, now disbanded, came out of Itabira, a mid-sized mining city in Minas Gerais best known as the birthplace of the poet Carlos Drummond de Andrade and as one of Vale's flagship iron-ore operations. The band's name (Portuguese for Posthumous Memoirs, a nod to Machado de Assis's nineteenth-century novel) signals from the outset the literate, melancholic streak that has long run through Brazilian doom metal, particularly the cluster of bands that emerged from Minas Gerais in the late 1990s and 2000s in the wake of Anno Domini, Loathsome, and the broader Mineiro underground. Minas Gerais has always been the spiritual heart of Brazilian extreme metal (Belo Horizonte being the birthplace of Sepultura, Sarcófago, Holocausto, and the Cogumelo Produções label), but its doom scene developed in a quieter, more regional register, often anchored in cities outside the capital like Juiz de Fora, Uberlândia, and indeed Itabira. The 2007 LP Mente em Pesadelo is the band's sole full-length and the document by which they are remembered: a Portuguese-language doom record whose title (Mind in Nightmare) telegraphs the project's lyrical territory of dread, depression, and interior collapse. Stylistically, the album sits in the traditional doom lane shaped by Candlemass, early Cathedral, and the more sorrowful side of the My Dying Bride catalog, rather than the funereal extremes that other Brazilian doom acts have explored. As a regional Mineiro doom record from the late 2000s, Mente em Pesadelo is the kind of artifact that gives the Brazilian doom underground its texture: not a breakthrough, but a faithful, locally-rooted contribution to a small but stubborn national scene.
