Melancholy of Evil

Melancholy of Evil is a black metal project based in Itabaiana, a city in the agricultural interior of Sergipe, the smallest state in Brazil and one of the least documented in international metal coverage. Sergipe's metal underground has historically clustered around the capital Aracaju, which over the past two decades has quietly become one of the most consistent producers of raw and orthodox black metal in the Brazilian northeast, building a regional infrastructure of cassette labels, gig houses, and zines that operates at a deliberate distance from the southeastern axis of Rio, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte. Melancholy of Evil works in the rawer, more occult end of that lineage. The 2021 demo Nigrum es (The Black Art) announces the project's preoccupations in its very title: a Latin tag for the dark art, an inheritance from the grimoire-and-Sabbath aesthetic that has shaped Brazilian black metal since Mystifier and Sarcófago first welded ritual blasphemy to the genre. The recent 2025 single All Evil and the forthcoming 2026 demo of the same name suggest a project working at the patient pace typical of small-circulation raw black metal, where releases function more as ritual objects than as commercial product. Stylistically, Melancholy of Evil belongs to the lineage that runs from Aracaju's orthodox circle (acts in the orbit of labels like Hammer of Hate's South American distribution and a constellation of Sergipano cassette imprints) back to the foundational Brazilian first wave, with melancholic, mid-paced passages weighing against the more aggressive tremolo runs. The result is the kind of regionally specific black metal that gives the Brazilian northeast its quiet but unmistakable identity within the broader scene.
