Maul Lihr

Maul Lihr operates from Votorantim, a mid-sized industrial city in the Sorocaba metropolitan region of São Paulo state, far enough from the capital's saturated extreme-metal circuit to develop on its own terms. The project trades the urban velocity associated with São Paulo's classic underground (the Cogumelo-adjacent thrash and death lineage that gave Brazil Sepultura, Sarcófago, and Vulcano) for something quieter and more interior: a black metal/dark ambient hybrid that owes more to Scandinavian forest mysticism than to South American sulfur. The 2022 full-length Grimhylda is the centerpiece of the catalog, a long-form work that leans into atmosphere and texture rather than blasting orthodoxy, threading raw tremolo passages through ritual dark-ambient interludes in a way that recalls the dungeon-synth-adjacent fringes of the second wave more than the necro raw black metal that dominates much of the contemporary Brazilian scene. That sensibility puts Maul Lihr closer in spirit to the introspective, nature-haunted strains of black metal cultivated by smaller Brazilian projects across the interior of São Paulo and Minas Gerais than to the war-metal-influenced Aracaju or Belo Horizonte cells. Operating in the long shadow of Brazil's first-wave pioneers but with no obvious interest in their blackened-speed-thrash template, Maul Lihr instead represents a quieter strand of the country's black metal: solitary, atmospheric, and rooted in regional landscape rather than blasphemic spectacle. Votorantim, with its cement works and the looming Serra de São Francisco, gives the music a literal backdrop of industry and wilderness pressed against one another, and Grimhylda reads as a work shaped by that geography as much as by any specific scene affiliation.
