Marenauta

Marenauta operates out of Mogi das Cruzes, the Alto Tiete city sitting just east of the Sao Paulo metropolitan core — close enough to the capital's scene to plug into it, far enough out to develop a distinct local identity. Their 2021 debut Maremoto was tracked at Bigorna Studio in Mogi das Cruzes itself, a six-song document that lands the band squarely inside Brazil's robust stoner-doom and desert-rock conversation — a national scene that has been one of the most active in Latin America, anchored by the Abraxas label, championed by Bruxa Verde, and populated by Sao Paulo neighbors like Jupiterian, Saturndust, Weedevil, and Chant of the Goddess. The Marenauta sound is unmistakably indebted to the Kyuss/Sleep/Yob axis that shaped global stoner-doom — fuzzed-out riff cycles, ocean-deep bass weight, vocals delivered as part of the atmosphere rather than as a separate melodic line — but the name itself (a nautical-cosmic compound suggesting a navigator at sea) signals an interest in the more imagistic, almost psychedelic edge of the genre rather than its punk-derived stoner-rock end. Mogi das Cruzes is not Sao Paulo proper, and Marenauta's positioning reflects that: they share members and stages with the broader paulista scene without inheriting its more sludge-leaning aggression, drifting instead toward the desert-rock-meets-doom register that has become the southeastern Brazilian variant of the form.
