Makayra

Makayra operates out of Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso — a city whose metal underground is one of the most isolated in the country, sitting roughly 1500 kilometers from the Sao Paulo–Rio axis where Brazilian extreme metal traditionally consolidates. That distance has historically forced Mato Grossense bands to build their own ecosystem, and Cuiabá's scene has done exactly that: the legendary Cavernas Bar has hosted Brazilian and international acts for close to two decades, Extremuncao laid down a death metal foothold from 1993 onward, G.T.W. helped open the extreme metal door, and a younger generation funneled through the Coletivo Supernova space has kept the pulse moving. Makayra has surfaced inside this network, sharing stages — including a 2022 bill at Malcom Pub backing Swedish heavy metal act Ambush — and developing a sound that splits the difference between thrash's mechanical aggression and the longer-form, riff-stacking instincts of progressive metal. Their 2025 LP Ensaio_2024, despite its rehearsal-document title, plays as a deliberate statement of where the band sits stylistically: thrash with technical patience, structurally indebted to the Bay Area template but routed through the prog impulse that shaped Brazilian guitarists from Andre Matos onward. The Brazilian thrash lineage is overwhelming — Sepultura, Sarcofago, Vulcano, Holocausto — and almost entirely centered in Minas Gerais and the southeast, which makes a Cuiabá thrash band carrying a progressive thread an unusual proposition: the city is closer to Bolivia than to Belo Horizonte, and the scene's relative quarantine seems to be feeding rather than constraining what Makayra is willing to attempt.
