Madbong

Madbong is an instrumental sludge/stoner outfit based in Olinda, the historic colonial city pressed against Recife on Pernambuco's coast. The band emerged in 2025 with a rush of activity, a self-titled debut EP led by the single Usuario, a live document titled Fornalha (Ao vivo), and the Usuario release itself appearing across the year. Olinda and Recife together form one of Brazil's most distinctive heavy-music ecosystems, a city pair whose Mangue Beat legacy from the 1990s (Chico Science, Nacao Zumbi, Mundo Livre S/A) gave way over the 2000s and 2010s to a thriving stoner, doom, sludge and noise underground that has produced bands like Sierva Maria, Mabombe, Devotos and a dense network of riff-driven instrumental acts that draw equally on maracatu rhythmic textures, the heat-warped psychedelia of the Northeast, and the standard Sleep/Eyehategod/Kyuss lineage. Madbong sits squarely in that Pernambucano heavy continuum: instrumental by design, hot and overdriven in tone, and shaped by the same Recife-area live circuit that supports the Hellcife festival and venues like Estelita. The instrumental decision is itself notable, in a Brazilian scene where Portuguese lyrics carry strong identitarian weight, Madbong's wordless approach pushes the music toward the rhythmic, almost ritual physicality that Northeastern heavy bands have long made into a regional signature. Madbong's first-year output suggests a band intent on building its identity through live work as much as recordings, in keeping with the gig-driven culture of the Olinda-Recife metro.
