Judgment of Souls

Judgment of Souls were a heavy/thrash metal band out of São Paulo whose lone document, the EP Suffer, captures a unit working the crossover seam between traditional heavy metal songwriting and the relentless rhythmic attack that has been São Paulo's calling card since the 1980s. The Paulista metal scene is a beast of its own — denser, more crossover-friendly, and historically more aligned with American thrash than the bestial blackened death sound that came out of Belo Horizonte. It is the city that birthed Korzus, Dorsal Atlântica's spiritual cousins, Torture Squad, Nervosa, and Project46, and it remains Brazil's largest live circuit, with venues and DIY spaces clustered through neighborhoods like Bixiga and the centro that have hosted thrash gigs for four straight decades. Judgment of Souls slot into a particular layer of that scene: the post-2010s wave of younger bands that grew up on classic Bay Area thrash and NWOBHM in roughly equal measure, then filtered that double inheritance through São Paulo's heavier, more aggressive sensibility. Suffer leans on galloping mid-tempo riffs, twin-guitar harmonies that nod toward Iron Maiden and Helloween as much as Slayer, and clean-throated shouted vocals that recall the late-'80s heavy/thrash hybrid pioneered by acts like Vio-lence and the rougher edges of Metal Church. The band has since gone inactive, which is a familiar arc for São Paulo's middle tier: scenes where the venue circuit is strong but the financial pressures of being a working musician in Brazil push members back into day jobs. Their recorded output remains a small but legitimate artifact of São Paulo's still-thriving thrash continuum.
