In Void Sun

Formed in 2016 in Campina Grande, the inland Paraíba university city that sits up on the Borborema plateau a couple of hours west of João Pessoa, In Void Sun is a heavy/stoner/doom power trio working the warm, fuzz-saturated end of the Brazilian doom continuum. The lineup of Alexandre Gulu on vocals and guitar, Emílio Araújo on second guitar and Elison Silva on bass put out their first single Internal Void in December 2019 and have been a fixture of the Northeast Brazilian doom underground since, sharing aesthetic and circuit DNA with the broader paraibano and pernambucano stoner-doom scene that has grown up around the Recife/João Pessoa/Campina Grande triangle over the past decade. The band's stated thematic territory of magic and witchcraft slots them squarely into the post-Electric Wizard / post-The Devil's Blood lane of occult doom, where Sabbathian downtuned riff repetition meets desert-rock fuzz worship and Coven-era ritual imagery, and where the harsh sertão sun of inland Paraíba provides an unusually appropriate backdrop for music about black magic baked into amplifier valves. Campina Grande's metal scene is small but unusually self-sufficient, sustained by a network of bar venues, a strong local zine and Telegram-channel culture, and the city's longstanding identity as Paraíba's other cultural capital. In Void Sun operates unsigned, releases independently through Bandcamp, and represents the kind of regional Northeast Brazilian doom outfit that almost never breaks past the country's borders but quietly keeps the genre's roots watered in places where it has no business surviving.
