Griva

Griva is one of the dozens of one-man and small-collective black metal projects that have spread across Brazil over the last decade, working in the depressive / suicidal lane that has become its own discrete sub-scene inside the country's already crowded black metal underground. The project is catalogued on Encyclopaedia Metallum as a Brazilian black metal act with independent / unsigned status, which is the default condition for the DSBM Brazil ecosystem - a loose network of bedroom recorders, blog-zine writers and Bandcamp labels who feed compilation series like "DSBM Brazil" and "Depressivos Hinos Suicidas" and trade releases through Facebook groups rather than physical distros. Brazil's depressive black metal scene is one of the densest in the world outside the original Scandinavian-Eastern European core; the country has bands in nearly every state, supported by a fanbase that gathers around the long-running DSBM Brazil collective, and Griva sits inside that lineage. The aesthetic is the one this whole sub-scene shares: monochrome cover art, tremolo riffing pitched somewhere between Xasthur-style atmospheric murk and the more rawly produced Eastern European school, vocals tracked as a single layered rasp rather than the cleaner shrieks the second wave favoured.
