Godspawn

Out of Jundiaí, the industrial belt city northwest of São Paulo that's quietly fed a steady stream of acts into the paulista underground, Godspawn surfaced as one more reminder that black metal in Brazil remains a hand-passed, demo-traded affair rather than a festival-circuit machine. The project broke ground in 2018 with the full-length "During the Dawn," a seven-track, twenty-one-minute strike that runs at the kind of length the original second-wave demo bands favored, then followed with the EP "To Embrace the Flames of a Burning Soul" later the same year. Both releases came out independently and circulated through the usual paulista chain of small distros, Bandcamp pages and the Headbangers Brasil and Imprensa do Rock writeups that act as informal gatekeepers for new São Paulo black metal. Stylistically Godspawn keeps its language Latin and ceremonial - track titles like "Pro Omnibus Dii Inferos" and "O Podre da Carne" plant the project in the same anti-clerical, blasphemy-as-aesthetic tradition that's threaded through Brazilian black metal since the early Sarcófago and Mystifier days, but with the more economical riffing of newer paulista outfits rather than the open warfare of the 80s Belo Horizonte school. Jundiaí itself has long sat in the shadow of the capital's bigger venues, but the city has its own quiet history of metal (Folklord and Unreal Death Metal both grew out of the same scene) and Godspawn fits that lineage of bands who'd rather press a small run, play the occasional regional show and keep working than chase visibility. The combined 2018 output is short by design - a manifesto rather than a career statement - and the band has stayed visible enough on streaming and underground compilations to suggest the project remains in motion.
