Dystopya
Dystopya is a Power Metal band from Natal, RN, BR. Their sound spans Power Metal, Progressive Metal, Thrash Metal. Dystopya, stylized DYSTOPYA, is a progressive metal band from Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte on Brazil's northeastern coast, founded by vocalist Mike Oliva after he concluded that the local scene lacked anything in the particular hybrid style he wanted to play. The lineup has reportedly never changed since the band's inception, with Oliva on vocals, Marcelo Barcellos on guitar, Thacito Aran on bass, and Josivan Nascimento on drums, an unusual stability for an underground Brazilian band.
Their first full release, the four-track The Time Is Now!, appeared in June 2014, followed by Insanity (Studio Session) and the EP Welcome To Your Insanity, issued in February 2016. All three releases are self-published through their Bandcamp page, and their tagging spans progressive, power, and thrash metal, reflecting a deliberately omnivorous approach that pulls from the European prog-power tradition while keeping a Brazilian thrash bite underneath. Dystopya operates within the long-running Potiguar metal scene, a regional underground that has existed for more than three decades, traced back to pioneers Serpentários (later Sodoma) and built up through later acts like Deadly Fate, Crosskill, Sertão Sangrento, Kataphero, Shedim, Evil Empire, Torment The Skies, and Sanctifier, with figures like Rufino Hellfire running the Gravadora Inferno label and store and the long-running Programa Natal Metal radio show documenting the scene. The Almanaque do Heavy Metal Potiguar, by Daniel Dose Bernardo, has formally chronicled the scene from 1985 to 1999, and Dystopya represents a more recent generation working within that established infrastructure. The band's lyrics, all written by Oliva, lean toward themes of mental disintegration and societal collapse, consistent with the dystopian concept that gives the project its name.
