Desvanecer

Desvanecer come out of Nova Friburgo, the cool, high-altitude town in the Região Serrana of Rio de Janeiro state — a mountain enclave settled by Swiss immigrants in 1818 that has, over the last decade, quietly produced a disproportionate share of Rio's underground extreme metal. The Serrana scene has been documented through outlets like Whiplash.Net and Portal Multiplix, which have profiled neighbours and contemporaries including Sutura (old-school death/black), Neblina Suicida (black metal, formed 2010), Bruthus (crossover thrash, 2017), Envid (death) and Nebiroth Von D. (death metal, 2020), as well as the Friburgo Rock Festival that anchors the region's calendar. Desvanecer's sound — self-tagged on Bandcamp as black metal, thrash metal, speed metal and metalpunk — places them inside a very particular current that has reasserted itself in Brazilian extreme music: the unholy compound of first-wave black metal (Bathory, Hellhammer), South American black/thrash filth (Sarcófago's Inri, Mutilator, Holocausto), and the leather-and-bullet-belt speed metal that ran alongside it. Their 2016 single Baco, Te Invoco! — its title invoking Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and ecstatic ruin — is the band's earliest documented release, a fitting opening shot for a project whose aesthetic sits squarely in the metalpunk lineage that runs from Brazilian forebears like Mystifier and Holocausto through to contemporary South American underground labels trading in cassette and 7-inch culture. Nova Friburgo's cold, foggy mountains have produced more extreme metal per capita than its population would suggest, and Desvanecer are part of that quiet output: a band working in tribute to a tradition Brazil helped invent.
