Desert Gods

Desert Gods formed in 2018 in Jundiaí, a mid-sized industrial city about an hour northwest of São Paulo whose rock and metal community has historically lived in the shadow of the capital's larger scene but has built its own circuit of venues, festivals and Facebook-organised gig networks (Rock Jundiaí, Agenda do Rock Jundiaí-SP, and the city's Sesc venue all anchor regular shows). The band is logged in the Encyclopaedia Metallum (Metal Archives entry 3540461819) as an active, unsigned heavy metal act, though their Bandcamp tags — heavy doom metal, doom metal — point to the slower, weightier end of the traditional spectrum they operate in. Their 2018 debut LP Sacred Ground bears this out: an intro followed by the title track, then Conflict, then Chaos and Destruction, a tracklisting whose blunt one-word titles read as deliberately classicist rather than ironic. The record draws from the same well that São Paulo–region bands like Pesta, Nameless Gods and Desert Druid and the Acid Caravan have drawn from in recent years — Sabbath's foundational riff vocabulary fed through Saint Vitus, Candlemass and the slower side of the NWOBHM. What separates Desert Gods from the more psych-leaning Brazilian stoner contingent is that traditionalist instinct: there is no desert-rock fuzz worship here, no Kyuss cosplay, just heavy, mid-paced riff music played straight. They belong to the broader resurgence of independent traditional doom in interior São Paulo, working without label support, releasing through Bandcamp, and accumulating their listenership the way most Brazilian underground heavy bands do — show by show, post by post, in a scene that quietly continues to outproduce its press coverage.
