Cumullus

From Porto Alegre, the gaúcho capital that has incubated extreme metal in Brazil's deep south since the days of Panic and Sextrash, Cumullus operates at the symphonic, atmospheric end of the black metal spectrum. The project is catalogued on the Encyclopaedia Metallum as a melodic black act and remains independent, releasing its material outside the established label system. Its most recent statement, the EP Nuvens de Ódio — Portuguese for 'clouds of hatred' — surfaced in 2025 and leans into the kind of stormy, weather-borne imagery the band's name already suggests: a cumullus is a Latinate twist on cumulus, the towering vertical cloud formations that build over the southern Brazilian plains in summer before collapsing into violent thunderstorms. That meteorological metaphor reads as deliberate. Rio Grande do Sul's metal scene has long traded in cold, blackened atmospheres, partly a reaction to a regional climate that swings closer to the temperate brutality of the European south than to the tropical Brazil most outsiders picture, and Cumullus channels that same austerity through layered keyboards, tremolo-picked guitar lines and a vocal delivery that prizes ritual menace over melodic clarity. The project sits within a long Porto Alegre lineage of extreme acts — alongside groups like Hellish War, Ocnos and the historic Necromancia — that have used the Latin and Portuguese languages as tools of conjuration rather than concession to commercial sensibility. Cumullus's sparse online footprint, limited largely to Metal Archives, SoundCloud and underground torrent trackers, places it firmly in the cassette-and-CDr underground that continues to define Brazilian war and symphonic black metal long after the genre's first wave of recognition.
